Route 24/25 – Pokémon Red/Green
About game/music
This is “Route 24/25” from “Pokémon Red/Green”(1998, GB), developed by Game Freak, published by Nintendo.
This is composed by Junichi Masuda.
“Pokémon Red/Green” is the first Pokémon game, in which the Kanto region is the setting for adventure.
It was released on the Game Boy and had a monochrome screen.
A little later, “Pokémon Yellow“(1999, GB) was also released with Pikachu as a partner.
This title was remade as “Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen“(2004, GBA), and “Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!/Let’s Go, Eevee!“(2018, NSW)
This song is used on the road from Cerulean City to Bill’s house.
It is also the iconic song that plays first when you start the game, and was used in Pokemon Presents on 2022.2.27 when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was announced.
About game/music
(note: The first half of the arrangement is based on Heartgold/SoulSilver version.)
- There is a complexity of sound due to the many inverted forms used.
- maybe an attempt to create a complex sound on the Game Boy which has a limited number of sounds?
- Almost a triad, sounds simple.
- The movement/rhythm of the bass gives the image of a forward marching pace.
- It’s not a chord progression that feels like it’s moving forward and forward like a pop song.
